The University of Turku is acting on behalf of the Finnish Virtual University.

Finnish Virtual University is a consortium of all the universities in the country, 21 altogether established early this year and supported by the Finnish Ministry of Education. The aim of the initiative is to develop versatile online support services for all net-based teaching and research activities made available through the collaboration of the members. The services should be fully fledged by 2004. The idea is to enable students and staff of all member universities to access and fully exploit on-line courses and other new net-supported learning and research facilities made available through the network of member universities. Eventually it should lead to a national virtual campus, which will furthermore aim at extending its services to interested individuals and communities outside the traditional Finnish academic community.
